Tories’ Abortion Push deletes the Human Right to Life and Undermines the GFA

Aontú Leader & Meath West TD, Peadar Tóibín, has criticised the new powers being taken by Northern Secretary Brandon Lewis to strong arm the North into accepting the extreme Westminster’s Abortion legislation and further erode the GFA.

An Teachta Tóibín: “From the outset, the imposition of abortion on the North by Westminster has been undemocratic and in complete violation of the Good Friday Agreement. This imposition was facilitated by both Sinn Féin and the SDLP. Attempts to impose radical abortion law on the North have been met with fierce resistance from every corner of society. Now, in an effort to bypass Stormont, Irish self-determination, devolution and the GFA,

The Northern Secretary is availing of new powers so he can force the Northern Health Department to expand abortion services. Many people have been shocked and disappointed by SF working hand in hand with Westminster in this circumvention of Irish democracy. They have binned 200 years of Republic ideals of Self Determination in doing so.”

“Aontú will not sit by and allow the British Government to dictate to this part of Ireland. We have stood firm in our resolve in support for the Human Right to life from the day of our foundation. We in Aontú have been speaking to our legal representatives to seek a legal route to protect devolution, the Good Friday Agreement and the lives of the weakest amongst us.”

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
