Tóibín Calls Palestinian Ambassador to Communicate Solidarity with Palestinians

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín TD has called the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland today to offer solidarity and support to Palestinians in this time of shocking devastation.  He stated;

“It is absolutely shocking that over 219 people have been killed in Gaza. That 63 of those killed are children is beyond brutal. Nowhere, ever has the killing 63 children ever improved the security of any country. The disproportionate response by Israel of off the scale”.

“Each life taken only serves to build fear, hate and more violence. I believe that the shocking manner in which the people Gaza are being held is the biggest threat to Israel’s security. Justice is the best guarantor of peace. We in Ireland know better than most, that equal rights, democratic freedom and justice are the cure to generations of hate and violence”.

“The lives lost in Israel for each individual family are a disaster and a tragedy. These two are heart-breaking. For each of these people their world has ended too. Dialogue and engagement must happen. It’s critical that the UN ends its failure in fulfilling its raison d’être, to ensure the peaceful coexistence of nations. The US role in holding up an UN Security Council Resolution is adding to the problems in Palestine. I have written a letter to the US Embassy in Ireland urging them to end their blocking of the Resolution”.

In our short existence Aontú has protested out side the Chinese Embassy in Support of the Uighur peoples. We have raised the crisis in Myanmar in the Dáil and we will continue to campaign for justice throughout the world.

Le gach dea-ghuí,

Peadar Tóibin

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
