Tóibín: “Scoliosis scoping inquiry report due this week is undermined by failure to fully involve families of children.”

The Aontú leader said patient groups contacted to say they have lost faith in the report – set to be delivered this week – to result in change.

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín says patient advocate groups have lost faith in the scoping exercise, the report on which is due to be published next week.

The Meath West TD said: “We have been contacted by families involved, who say they understand the findings are to be published next week.

“They pulled out of the exercise earlier this year as they said they said the facilitator had access to reports that they did not.

“They fear this means the whole exercise will be a waste of time; and there will be no accountability and so nothing will change.”

Deputy Tóibín added: “The Children’s Health Ireland crisis has been running for years. Some of the most vulnerable children have been treated terribly and damaged significantly.

“The Government set up a scoping inquiry so families can get truth and justice about what happened to their families. But then families withdrew from it, because they were not given documents to engage in it properly.

“It could now be a waste of time. They have created a process which loses the confidence of those wronged, and there isn’t truth and justice brought at all.”

In June, Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Paediatric Advocacy Group, along with Scoliosis Advocacy Network, said the terms of reference of the inquiry did not meet the needs of those at the centre of the scandal.”
