Tóibín: “Major insulation issue is the latest cause of delay at National Children’s Hospital.”

Sep 23, 2026

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín reveals how 400 bathrooms at the beset NCH will have to be redone as the insulation is not up to regulation.
Peadar Tóibín said: “It has been reported to me by a person working in the National Children’s Hospital that 400 bathrooms have a major problem with the insulation used. Fixing these defective bathrooms will create massive delays and will cost more to the taxpayer.”
“It is not the first insulation problem either. In 2022, the hospital had to have parts of its facade replaced, due to a fault with sub-standard insulation, which was the same type used in the 2017 Grenfell Tower disaster.
Deputy Tóibín added: “Another worker told me the ventilation system is still not up to the clinical standard necessary. This goes through most of the 5,700 rooms. On the last count there were over 100,000 defects to be fixed. People working on the hospital say it will be at least 2028 by the time the handover period is completed.”
“There have been 20 missed deadlines in the delivery of the hospital. The cost has ballooned to €2.24billion. It was supposed to open in 2020.”
When will the 400 bathrooms will be fixed? What will be the cost and who will be held to account? When will the incineration of taxpayer’s money come to an end?”
