Aontú leader Peadar Toibín on the fallout of the no confidence motion.
Aontú leader Peadar Toibín said the government was given a “smack in the mouth” with the no confidence motion today (TUES).
The Meath TD – an instrumental campaigner in the fuel protests – said: “This government is now a damaged government. It has taken a big hit with the loss of two TDs, including a minister.
“The genie is out of the bottle. They think they can put it back in, but they can’t.”
He singled out Independent TDs who failed to back the vote of no confidence for particular criticism.
“These are the ones who sell themselves as standing for the people and yet when they’re up against it, they don’t. There’s no way any Independent TD should back the government at this moment in time.”
He continued: “This is a government of chaos. Its democratic authority comes from the citizens. But it refused to meet those same hard-working citizens.
“A ‘too long in government arrogance’ pulled down the shutters and escalated protests with threats of physical force from the Gardaí and the Army.
“Families can’t afford to pay for mortgages, heat their homes or feed their children.
“A government that does not listen to the people should never be in government again. This government has to go.”
