It is beyond incredible that Michael Martin has yet to make a single comment over the scenes in Spain where tens of thousands of Moroccans have entered illegally.
That’s according to Aontu Senator Sarah O’Reilly who says
“Normally Michael Martin could not exactly be described as shy or retiring when there are column inches to feature in but he is curiously silent over the shocking, disturbing scenes in Spain which undoubtably have consequences for Ireland .
Spain’s reckless decision to grant a broad amnesty to migrants sends out the wrong message and this surge of up to 65,000 people displays that in no uncertain terms
The scenes of mostly men entering the tiny area of Ceuta were no doubt very concerning for the people who actually live there. Very concerning too were the images of little babies and children whose lives were endangered by this folly. People also died trying to make the crossing and this too is tragic
Rewarding people who enter or remain in a country or dominion undermines the law, weakens confidence in legal immigration, creates fear and encourages further high risk illegal immigration.
Given Ireland’ s vulnerabilities around Illegal immigration which are well chronicled, this surge in Spain leaves us very exposed.
In Italy , Georgia Meloni has recognised her country’s security and social needs and has suspended free movement with Spain.
She has done what a responsible leader of any country should do and is to be commended .
The German Chancellor has also demanded that Morocco takes back illegal immigrants and he too has said that Schengen should be suspended with Spain if necessary
Frances is upping its border controls
Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain himself has finally come out and condemned the surge of thousands of illegal migrants, terming the massive influx as a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity .
Michael Martin’s silence is more damming given Ireland’s Presidency of the EU.
The spotlight of the entire continent is on us and yet not a peep out of our leader.
I am tonight calling on him to condemn this surge of people and outline what measures he is going to take to up our security controls “
