Peter Whelan has been farming just outside Slane for 20 years and sells free-range produce every Saturday at a local farmer’s market.
He knows and understands the pressures on small and medium businesses, especially in these times of rising fuel and energy prices. Peter has worked hard for the constituency of Laytown-Bettystown and the surrounding areas, since being selected by Aontű to be the representative for this vast area. He has headed up many high-profile campaigns in this role, and will continue to do so for the people of this region in East Meath.
Peter was recently appointed a Peace Commissioner by the Minister for Justice.
Peter has been a high profile member of the save the Boyne campaign. In 2021, Dawn Meats sought permission from Meath County Council to construct a 7.2 kilometre pipeline to discharge treated wastewater into the River Boyne. Peter spearheaded a massive campaign involving many local residents along with angling groups, kayakers and many other people who enjoyed this great facility. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of all involved, this planning was overturned by An Bord Pleanála in January 2025.
