Government U-turn on Fuel Tax is welcome –  Tóibín

Aug 21, 2026

Aontú leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín stated:

“Aontú welcomes the government’s u-turn on the fuel hikes. This is a win for people power. It is clear the government was afraid to risk fuel protests during the EU Presidency.

There needs now to be a fundamental change in the government’s approach. The tax on fuel is too high. The government needs to accept this. Its not a luxury good, its a staple good. High fuel taxes are bad for families, farmers, and businesses. They are bad for the economy. At this price trajectory the government must bin future excise and carbon tax increases”.
