“Government must stop threatening families with fuel tax hikes” – Tóibín

Aug 21, 2026

Aontú Leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín welcomes the Government’s decision to roll back the planned fuel tax increase due on September 1st.

The Deputy said  “ This should be the beginning of a permanent solution, not a temporary reprieve.”

“The Government’s decision to roll back the planned fuel tax increase from September 1st is welcomed, but families, elderly people and businesses need more than temporary relief they need certainty.”

“The Government has already collected almost €1.5 billion in Mineral Oil Tax and carbon taxes in the first six months of 2026 alone. It will continue to collect substantial revenues from fuel taxation for the remainder of the year.”

“There is no justification for repeatedly threatening people with further increases at the pump. Every time the Government signals another fuel tax hike, it creates uncertainty for families already struggling with household bills, for elderly people dependent on their cars and for businesses facing rising operating costs.”

“The Government needs to stop using fuel taxes as a recurring threat and put a long-term, predictable policy in place that protects people from further increases in the cost of getting to work, getting children to school and keeping businesses operating.”

“Aontú will continue to fight against further fuel tax increases and will push for a permanent approach that gives families and businesses the certainty they need.”Concluded the Deputy
