Peadar Tóibín on Garvaghy Road: The human cost of this parade was 21 lives. The government must step in.

The Aontú leader has described the Parades Commission decision is one of the most destabilising that could possibly have been made.
Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has denounced the decision by the Parades Commission to allow the Drumcree orange order parade for the first time since 1998.
He said: “The Irish government must step in and use its influence with the British government on this.
“The human cost of this parade was 21 lives. It is the most destabilising decision that could possibly have been made.”
He said: “Drumcree was one of the most bitter and dangerous disputes of the 1990s. It fuelled sectarian tension, violence and death. Resurrecting it could put progress in the north back decades. This is a major mistake. The Irish government must intervene.”
He was reacting after the Parades Commission today (FRI) gave the orange order permission to march through the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road on Sunday. The parade has been banned for almost 30 years.
The panel announced its determination online, confirming the Portadown District Orange Order branch can march along the nationalist Garvaghy Road in Co Armagh.
