History was made in Cork today (26th January ) when one of Co. Cork’s most dedicated Independent Politicians spoke on his decision to join forces with the political party, Aontú.
Making his inaugural speech in Cork County Hall as an Aontú Rep for Fermoy, Cllr Peter O’ Donoghue said he found his ‘clan ‘ in Aontú, a party he said that, just seven years on from its formation, has built a strong foundation in Cork and across the country for keeping to its core values of life, unity and economic justice .
Cllr O’ Donoghue said
“I am absolutely honoured to be here today representing my constituents and representing Aontú and all that it stands for.
I know that so many of you were surprised to see me joining a political party as opposed to continuing on as an Independent but I realised that for me to achieve my political goals on my own as an independent was impossible, I had to unite and join forces with like-minded individuals.
I was totally disillusioned with party politics as I didn’t get into politics to become a career politician, I didn’t get into politics to fall into line, I got into politics bring real representation to the people of my constituency and to try and change the direction in which our country is heading.
I needed a party that would align with those values.
Aontú is that party.
It is a party which is built on morals and principles, a party that has core principles of life, unity and economic justice and did not change those core values according to the direction of the prevailing winds.
I also saw a very Democratic party, run from the ground up by its grassroot members and not having policy dictated from the top down, a political organisation where people were not censored from speaking their minds, but where a competition of ideas was encouraged.
Aontú doesn’t pander to Europe or to big business, instead it listens to people, putting the Irish people first .
It is made up of sensible, logical people full of common sense who believe in protecting the sovereign constitutional Republic which our brave ancestors fought so heroically to attain.
We are working incredibly hard to achieve the ultimate goal of uniting our divided island, as well as working to protect our nation’s historic culture and heritage.
Aontú has a very strong team in Cork, attracted by the principles of leader Deputy Peadar Tóibín and I am honoured to have the likes of Finian Toomey , Mona Stromsoe, Joe Walsh, Paddy Scully and many others who have worked tirelessly to put the foundations in place to make it possible for this day to happen.
As leader of Aontú in Cork County Council I look forward to continuing to work as hard as possible for the constituents I represent, but also now along with my Aontú colleagues in the county to grow the party into a real political force for the people of County Cork.
These are exciting times”
