People with hidden disabilities across Limerick got a huge boost this week with confirmation that Limerick City and County Council is to promote The Sunflower Project, following the successful advocacy and motion by Aontú Cllr Sarah Beasley.
Speaking following the passing of her Council motion, Cllr Beasley said
“I am delighted that people with hidden disabilities will now be far more visible in our city and county from now on.
This is something I have long pushed for as so many people with serious disabilities, that may not be immediately obvious, really suffer in long supermarket queues for example, hospitality outlets, public transport and retail outlets.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Project helps people with non-visible conditions; for example, they could be living with autism, chronic pain, or mental health challenges—by offering a subtle sunflower symbol (like a lanyard, pin, or business card) that lets others know that the wearer might need extra assistance.
This can come in the form of extra time at a till for example and makes hidden disabilities easier to recognise in places like airports, shops, and healthcare settings. As a voluntary global initiative, it encourages businesses and organisations to acknowledge the Sunflower Symbol and provide a bit of support.
The project aims to create more inclusive environments for those living with a range of hidden disabilities.
“I suffer from chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis so I know just how debilitating hidden disabilities can be.
Many people who may need to get ahead in a supermarket queue for example are not being rude or impatient, they just need to pay for their shopping and get back home.
The Sunflower Project is that little bit of additional assistance that may a huge difference to their lives”.
