Peadar Tóibín: “Micheal Martin is at odds with his own people on the triple lock. Deleting it is an affront to Irish democracy and impacts the future of our young people.”
The Aontú leader asked if the 20 TDs who signed a letter of opposition will stand up for the people of Ireland on the issue.
Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has said the Taoiseach should listen to a number of his own TDs, who want to stop a bill on the triple lock being rushed through the Dáil,
Deputy Tóibín – who is holding a public meeting on the issue later this week – said: “Deleting the triple lock is an affront to Irish democracy and the Irish people.
“It is part of a choreographed plan to ease this country into the EU defense union, which would see decisions made by the European Union about where our young men and women would go into the future.
“Now we hear 20 TDs have asked for a full discussion on it first. They have indicated their dissatisfaction in relation to Government policy on this.
“It’s quite startling that it appears there is no discussion with parliamentarians in relation to it.” He asked: “Will it be just another grumble? Or will they stand up for the people of Ireland in relation to this issue?”
Tóibín said a referendum is needed on it: “It was democratically coupled with Irish neutrality after the Nice treaty. So if the government seeks to change it they must have a referendum.”
Aontú is holding a public meeting on protecting the triple lock in the Teachers’ Club this Thursday.
The public meeting for peace and neutrality is on at Club na Múinteoirí – the Teachers’ Club – on Parnell Street in Dublin on Thursday June 25 at 8pm.
