Mícheal Martin Fails To Uphold the Good Friday Agreement Today In Meeting With Burnham. – Tóibín

Sep 21, 2026

Speaking after the meeting between Mícheal Martin and Andy Burnham concluded today, Aontú leader and Meath West TD criticised for his inaction in upholding the Good Friday Agreement.

“Mícheal Martin admits not raising the mechanism for calling a referendum on Irish Unity with the British Prime minister today. Yet again the Taoiseach has failed to call on the British government to uphold the Good Friday Agreement. He has failed to uphold the right of the people of the north, even to know what the democratic mechanism is, which would allow them to express their democratic will on a United Ireland.

It appears that the strategy of Burnham and the British government is that the threshold for a referendum is to remain shrouded in secrecy.  God forbid that people in a democracy would know how democratic decisions will actually be made.  That the Taoiseach should acquiesce with is strategy is wrong. It’s undemocratic. It’s against the Good Friday Agreement. It’s against our national interests. Mícheal Martin will be remembered, not for what he did on Unity, but for what he didn’t do”.
