Government promises of a permanent school in Monaghan for children with special needs must be realised as a matter of urgency.
Aontú Monaghan Rep Olivia Larkin, who is also Grants officer with SNAP (Special Needs Active Parents) says
“This situation has been dragging on for way too long and it’s the children and their parents who are suffering the brunt of this unacceptable inaction
“Currently we have a situation where money is being spent on the refurbishment of the temporary special school in Castleblayney, Monaghan Provision has been made for the allocation of 6 new portacabins/ prefabs, instead of that money going where it should …into a permanent and suitable permanent school .
Anybody with even the most rudimentary grasp of basic sums knows that taxpayer’s money should be spent for the long term and not on short term, stop gap measures that are not serving anybody.
I would like to know how much these are going to cost and if the Government’s lack of ambition and urgency around the erection of a permanent school is going to end up costing taxpayers a fortune .
Families have been left in limbo for far too long, waiting for assurances that never seem to materialise. Every year that passes without a permanent solution is another year where children are denied the facilities and stability they need to thrive. The community in Monaghan deserves better, and so do our most vulnerable children.”
Simon Harris is on record as promising that a site would be located and the school would be built .
He is very good at making promises and I am sure he doesn’t want to be continually associated with breaking them
We are going to raise this and other issues relating to this wholly unsatisfactory situation in the Dáil and Seanad as accountability and action matter.
