Hundreds of Navan commuters have responded to a local Councillor call to detail their personal experiences of using public transport in the town, ahead of her meeting with senior Bus Eireann Management this week. Unfortunately, the NTA has yet to respond to the meeting invite.
Aontú Cllr Emer Tóibín issued the call for commuters to send her their submissions listing the ongoing difficulties they are having using public transport, particularly the NX, 109 services and the Navan Town Buses in the busy Co. Meath town.
Cllr Toibin says
“The response from the public is vitally important ahead of my meeting this Friday (19th Dec) and I would really like to acknowledge their participation and thank them as their lived experiences is the strongest evidence we have of a public transport system that is completely broken.
The hundreds of responses I have received to my call really lays bare the incredible struggle people are enduring just trying to get to work or meet urgent hospital appointments. The host of ongoing chronic issues the travelling public are having to endure simply cannot go on.
At this stage, meaningful action and measurable improvements are not optional — they are long overdue — and I intend to make that clear at this very important meeting.
The lived experiences of the people who have to use this service is damning and Bus Eireann Management cannot be allowed to shirk from their responsibility to fix the host of ongoing issues in the delivery of services. The NTA, in its role, must similarly provide matching funding to meet the needs of the fast growing population of Navan Town in addition to the commuter needs of the county.
This is not a functioning public transport system — and people are exhausted by it.
I will be issuing a full report following my meeting and I expect Bus Eireann and NTA Management to pull up their socks and provide a service that the public can depend on”
