As farmers continue to go through a torrid time, Aontú Senator Sarah O’ Reilly has written to the Min for Agriculture seeking an urgent extension to the slurry and fertiliser spreading deadline.
She says that
“So many farmers I was talking to at the Virginia show said they are severely under pressure and really need an extension
Farmers understand, probably better than most, the importance of protecting water quality but we have to use common sense when exceptional weather conditions have disrupted usual farming conditions .
We know the farming calendar is subject to weather conditions, it’s not neat and tidy.
To this end I’ve also asked the Minister to consider a weather based system .The reality for farmers is the weather by its nature is unpredictable and it clearly does not make sense to tie farmers into a calendar system when weather is so changeable.
