A surge in serious anti-social behaviour in parts of Navan has renewed locals concerns about public safety.
Aontú Cllr Emer Tóibín claims that despite Garda reports and assurances from Meath County Council regarding CCTV activation and coverage, there has been no visible enforcement or response to incidents that have disrupted this once-quiet residential community.
“ This is so exasperating as these were promised 3 years ago but the cameras have yet to be turned on and locals are understandably, very frustrated and disappointed””
Cllr Tóibín says
“Recently we had a very serious incidence of alleged criminal activity and high level Garda presence has exposed a serious gap in public safety. These cameras are crucial for deterring crime and assisting Gardaí in investigations”.
She says
“Back in early 2022, a filtered permeability scheme was put in place on Convent Road as part of the town’s Active Travel scheme. In tandem with the cycle lane installation, CCTV cameras were part of the scheme to protect against any potential anti-social or criminal activity”.
“Residents were previously assured by Meath County Council who oversaw the construction of the cycle lane 3 years ago, that full CCTV surveillance of the road would prevent and deter anti-social behaviour. However, the current situation has left residents questioning why these cameras are still not active and why is it taking so long”.
“In light of these concerns, I am calling on Meath County Council to confirm when the CCTV cameras on Convent road and surrounding areas in Navan and Johnstown will be operational. Why is it taking 3 years for the Garda Commissioner to authorise the activation of CCTV around the town? There are young children, families and couples living in this area “
“It is proven and known that CCTV plays an extremely important part in ensuring criminals and those engaged in any anti social behaviour are apprehended”.
“Navan and its residents deserve a safe and secure environment. We need action, Garda resourcing and the activation of long-promised camera monitoring technology”.
