Aontú leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has criticised the British Prime Ministers statement that a United Ireland is off the table. An Teachta Tóibín stated:
“Many people will be shocked with Burnham’s statement today. It is incredibly misjudged. It is a significant breech of the Good Friday Agreement. A foundation stone of the GFA is that the people of the north will decide if and when there will be a United Ireland. The whole spirit of the GFA was that the people of the north would determine its future. That was a significant concession by nationalists at the time, as up to then it was a tenant of Irish nationalism that the people of Ireland should self-determine our own future.
The GFA is an international treaty. It has the democratic mandate of the Irish people. The Irish government is a cosignatory of the GFA. The Irish government must defend the GFA against any unilateral decision by the British government to rewrite it or ignore the main tenants of the agreement.
