Aontú Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly has slammed an amendment passed in Westminster tonight that will effectively legalise abortion up to birth for any reason.
The amendment will bring England and Wales into line with the North, the difference being that it is not being imposed, but rather the people’s representatives in England and Wales are being given a chance to debate and vote on the hugely important matter. Like the defenceless babies in the womb, if this amendment has it’s way – citizens of the North have no say.
Mrs Brolly said:
“Tonight we have witnessed the passage of an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill which will remove all legal safeguards for unborn children, and fully decriminalise abortion in England and Wales, effectively endorsing abortion up to birth for any reason. It is extremely sad that this is being tagged onto a Bill that is meant to punish crimes, yet the only person who will suffer as a result of it is a defenceless child.
The hallmark of this amendment is that it is even being opposed by some pro-abortion groups and politicians as going too far. Any legal remedy relating to ending the life of a child is being removed, so gender selection will be allowed, selection based on disability will be allowed, and home abortions up to any gestation will be allowed.
Normally, this type of legislation originates in London and is rolled out in the North, yet this time Westminster, the home of the 1967 Act, is actually catching up to the heinous anti-democratic imposition of abortion on the North without any mandate from the people, a majority of whom actually opposed it.
The Alliance Party and the SDLP are supporting this amendment. For the SDLP, surely this is the end of its candidates and canvassers telling people at the doors that they are a pro-life party? By putting her name to this disgraceful amendment today, Claire Hanna will have put an end to any semblance of respect the so-called party of civil rights have for the most important right – the right to life, and we will not let them forget it.”
