Fingal County Council has been told to get to ‘the back of the class’ after signposts as gaeilge in Castleknock are incorrect.
Aontú Cllr Ellen Troy says she has been contacted by several people in her constituency who are very exercised about the use of incorrect Irish on certain signs in the area.
She says:
“In this week of Seachtain na Gaeilge it is all the more galling to see this. Many irate constituents have been in contact with me to voice their annoyance over the sloppy way our native language is being translated and misinterpreted . It is quite unbelievable that the Irish translation for some signs is so completely wrong as to be almost laughable”.
“This is local government and some of the translations are absolutely bizarre. The expression ‘lost in translation’ was never so apt. One sign actually read the ‘angry Hotel’ for a local business which is way off”.
“Every council must have an Irish Language Officer by law, so this makes it all the more incredible. Irish is our national language and it is only right that it should be shown the respect it deserves” .
“I have tabled a motion to Fingal County Council seeking a complete audit of signs in Irish”.
“It’s high time that our beautiful teanga was shown some grá”.
