As more young lives lost on Donegal’s Roads, renewed call for drivers to be careful on the roads

May 18, 2026

The shocking deaths of three young men on Donegal’s roads over the weekend is another salutary reminder of the fragility of life and the need to be careful on the roads.

Aontú’s Mary T Sweeney says

“My heart goes out to the three families whose loved ones’ lives were ended so shockingly and so prematurely.

It is devastating for them, their wider families and the entire communities of Donegal Town, Ardara and Muff.

Road crashes wreak havoc in their wake.

Even when people escape with their lives, many victims have catastrophic injuries which may impact them forever.

It is desperately sad and these three young men bring to seven the number of people who have been killed on Donegal’s roads so far, this year.

Sadly, we know that this figure will rise and that is a very sobering thought.

We need to do more to stop these needless and tragic deaths.

The numbers of Garda units tasked with roads policing has dropped by a massive 40% since 2009 and this is critically important.

It is something we in Aontú have been consistently highlighting.

Donegal remains stubbornly high for road fatalities and unless we take this issue by the scruff of the neck, more and more families will be heartbroken throughout Donegal.
