Aontú motion to seek full public inquiry into Garda whistleblower crisis

Aontú motion to seek full public inquiry into Garda whistleblower crisis in their PMB time on November 4.

Leader Peadar Tóibín confirms party will not proceed yet with a motion of  No Confidence in Minister Helen McEntee, but says: “It is still the plan at a later date.”

Aontú has confirmed it will use their Dáil motion slot to seek a full inquiry into the garda whistleblower controversy.

Leader Peadar Tóibín said: “It is still Aontú’s plans to table a Motion of No Confidence in Minister Helen McEntee. But after discussions with the whistleblowers, it has been decided not to proceed with the Motion on November 4, but at a later date.

“The decision has been taken because a lot more information is to come to the fore in relation to the wrongdoing within the Gardaí and within the Minister’s Department. It is important that TDs have the full information before they vote on such an important motion.

“It had been hoped to get the whistleblowers before the Oireachtas Justice Committee before November 4 to give TDs and Seanadóirí a better understanding of the depth of crisis that exists within the Gardaí. This has not been possible. It is hoped now that such a meeting can be facilitated in the next month.

Aontú is working on a motion that would seek a full inquiry into the crisis, in the public interest.”

Serious questions remain about the whistleblowers’ grave concerns, how the whistleblowers were dealt with when they raised them; the role of senior garda management in responding to them, and the role of the then Justice Minister in the whole matter.

“Minister Helen McEntee has very serious questions to answer over her handling of the protected disclosures, her exposure of the whistleblowers’ identity and her refusal so far to investigate the matter”.
