The Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín TD has called on the government to ban social media AI tools which are being used to create sexualised content.
Speaking today Deputy Tóibín said: “The rapid progress of artificial intelligence is cause for concern. The danger posed by such technologies is immense and the lack of oversight is shocking. Recently there has been a trend on social media where certain AI technologies or robots are being instructed to remove clothing from individuals in photographs or videos which is naturally causing distress to the individuals in the pictures. This is utterly wrong and such technologies must be outlawed”.
Deputy Tóibín continued: “Sexual predators are using this technology online. Children are particularly vulnerable on social media, and we in Aontú intend to bring forward legislation which would ban smart phones for children under the age of sixteen, to protect them from harmful Internet content. The Internet is becoming a more and more dangerous place and there needs to be appropriate Oireachtas oversight of new technologies and a review of laws governing online content and social media companies”.
