Aontú Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly has slammed the recent “Cost of Legacy Report” as another deplorable avoidance tactic in upholding the fabric of our society.
Speaking in response to the recent “Cost of Legacy Report” the Aontú Deputy Leader described the report as an effort to put a financial cost on truth and justice. “Justice is central to any liberal democracy, if we are denied justice, we are being forced into what can only be described as a tin pot dictatorship. The truth is in fact free,” stated Mrs Brolly.
“Those seeking the truth in what have happened to their loved ones have had to bang the door of justice for decades now, a door that has been slammed in their faces continuously. We recently watched as Bridie Brown, wife of murdered GAA chairman Sean Brown, told the public of how tired she was and made her plea to the Secretary of State to ‘do the right thing.’ How many millions have been squandered in denying families their unequivocal fundamental right to truth and justice? Perhaps we could investigate the cost of the denial of justice all these years? Not only would the reversal of redaction or sitting with families to tell them the truth come at no financial cost but it would uphold all that is right in any liberal democracy, and would rightfully act as a deterrent to make sure history never again repeats itself.
The most recent attempts to place a price on justice are another deplorable avoidance tactic in upholding what should be the fabric of any society. Interestingly, the latest addition to the armour of avoidance tactics comes from a ‘think-tank’ which is ranked as one of the three least transparent think tanks in the UK in relation to funding. It’s important therefore to consider this as we hear their speculative costs on delivering what has been promised time and again. Those charged with ‘costing’ truth and justice might do well to remind themselves of the words of their own Winston Churchill: “The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.”
