The Aontú leader said the former Justice Minster must fully answer questions raised by senior gardai on protected disclosures- or step down.
Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has responded to Justice Minister Helen McEntee’s statement in the Dáil today on the whistleblowers’ scandal.
He said: “This is not a sufficient response. It was minimal and completely absent of any detail of the allegations that have been put to her.
“Minister Helen McEntee has broken the law and she must explain or resign.
“If she thinks this is her duty done in the Dáil regarding an explanation on this, she’s wrong. This is not the culmination of her responsibility.
“It is not a satisfactory response considering the enormity of the allegations of significant corruption at the head of An Garda Siochána.
“We are talking about the alleged punishment of whistleblowers in An Garda Siochána. We are talking about identity of those making protected disclosures being revealed to the person the disclosure concerned.
“The public realise the seriousness of this. It involves the former Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, as well as McEntee herself. It involves the death of a detective garda, It involves allegations of senior gardai using their powers to delay and deflect on such cases.
“Nobody could be satisfied with the Minister’s response. Today, she acknowledged she inappropriately interfered with the process. Her contribution confirmed she redirected the protected disclosure to the individuals impugned, including Drew Harris.
“We met with the whistleblowers, Dr Donal Corcoran and Brian O’Reilly, earlier today. It is clear there is a lot the Minister has not addressed.
“We will be moving forward with a motion of no confidence in Minister McEntee, if she refuses to answer questions on this.”
