Tóibín on Garvaghy Road failures: “Government leaders have not even met with residents – they’ve sat on their hands.”

Oct 9, 2026

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has criticised the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Foreign Affairs minister for not meeting with residents of the Garvaghy Road, two weeks on.

Said Tóibín: “Eleven nationalist residents’ groups from across the north met in Drumcree Community Centre yesterday. They warned that agreements in their areas about contentious Orange Order marches could end if the Orange Order keeps trying to force their way down Garvaghy Road.

“The peace of the last 28 years is in danger of unravelling on the government’s watch. The Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee yesterday stated that the only solution to Drumcree, is an agreement between the Orange Order and residents of the Garvaghy Road. Where has the Minister for Foreign Affairs been?

“For 28 years the orange march was banned from going down the Garvaghy Road. For 28 years there was peace. It’s not rocket science. Two weeks after this crisis started and neither Taoiseach, the Tánaiste or the Minister for foreign affairs have met with the Garvaghy Road Residents. Why?

“Defend the peace process. Stop sitting on your hands. Meet with the residents of the Garvaghy Road and tell the British Secretary of State to stop the Orange March.”
