People in parts of Mulhuddart who are continuing to endure a constant foul and ever-present smell deserve answers and action over the issue.
Local resident Grant Mason says
“A lot of us in Mulhuddart, especially around the Castle Curragh housing estate won’t look back on Summer 2026 with any great fondness.
Instead, we will look back on being horribly hot and clammy as we simply couldn’t open the windows.
The smell is disgusting at the best of times, but when the mercury climbs it is simply overpowering and horrible.
This issue is not new; it has been going on for years and I believe it is downright shameful that residents who have paid big mortgages cannot enjoy their homes the way they should.
I have contacted Cllr Ellen Troy, and she shares my frustration at the fact that the issue is seemingly a priority, and I am frustrated that not being passed between from

“I have been inundated with complaints from residents about this.
People have complained of feeling sick such is the noxious horrible odour.
It is completely unacceptable and I really feel for the people who have to put up with this.
It’s a long-standing issue and it’s disgraceful that firstly the absolute source of the nasty smell has not been categorically found, and secondly that it has not been dealt with.
I have been in contact with both Fingal Co Co and Uisce Eireann and though I’m an elected Cllr, I am finding it frustratingly difficult to try and get answers and get to the bottom of this issue.
Fingal Co Co has written to me to say it has passed the matter onto Uisce Eireann.
Uisce Eireann has come back to me to say that a main foul line going through Mulhuddart is “due to be decommissioned in the very near future”.
It states, “This should alleviate the malodours experienced in the Mulhuddart area”.
I find this answer very opaque and totally unclear.
I have written back to say I would like concrete answers.
What does ‘due to be decommissioned mean”?
What does the ‘very near future mean’
The people of Mulhuddart who have shelled out large sums of money for their homes deserve nothing less than clarity and a timeline for works to be completed satisfactorily”.
This sentiment is echoed by 24-year-old Grant who says.
“This horrible smell is impacting our lives in so many ways. We want answers and action now”.
