Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín: “This is a rip-off government. Yet its stated aim is to increase the carbon tax. Has it learned nothing?”
Peadar Tóibin has told the Dail the cost of living is higher than ever and people are struggling to pay for home heating and food, due to government policies.
The Meath West TD said today (THURS): “The price of petrol, diesel, home heating, groceries, rents and house prices are all sky high.
“None of this is by accident. The Government is incinerating people’s taxes in colossal waste. It’s jacking up rents with your dysfunctional housing and immigration policies.
“It’s ripping people off on fuel; taxing on petrol and diesel at 65%, an obscene level of tax.
“The Government is ripping people off on tolls. The M50 collected €216m on tolls last year, double what it was 10 years ago. It is taxing hauliers, which is a tax on food.
He added: “Ireland is the second most expensive location in Europe for food prices. It’s 15% dearer than the EU average for food.
“We’re paying 40% more for shopping than we were in 2021. That’s an extra €3,000 a year on groceries, for exactly the same stuff.
“One of the causes of this is the expense of the supply chain. The Government is key here again. You have jacked up prices on hauliers and hauliers have no option but to pass them on.
“Your actual stated aim is to raise carbon tax in October. Have you learned nothing?”
