PLEASE MIND OUR ELERLY AND VULNERABLE

Apr 8, 2026

With the huge hikes in fuel, energy and food costs there is a need to be vigilant around older people who are at risk of loneliness and isolation.

That’s according to Aontú Senator Sarah O’Reilly who met with members of ALONE, the advocacy organisation for older people in Leinster House.

Senator O’Reilly says

*It is widely recognised that human connection is a fundamental need. Simple activities such as meeting friends for tea, enjoying an evening out or taking a break play an essential role in people’s lives. Yet, soaring fuel prices are making individuals really nervous of spending their income on social outings.

*As people age, there is a genuine concern that their world may become smaller, so maintaining an active social life becomes especially important. Unfortunately, many are struggling due to significant increases in living expenses, which have a far-reaching negative impact on quality of life.

*Elderly people often live on fixed, limited budgets and lack the flexibility to earn additional income. The growing fear surrounding diminished finances, coupled with uncertainty from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, only intensifies their anxiety.

I met with ALONE, and it really is a wonderful resource for older people.

All the volunteers across Cavan Monaghan are thoroughly trained and crucially, fully Garda Vetted.

They are a vital source of contact, connection and information for older people offering valuable training on technology, location monitoring devices and home assistive technologies. They are trained to support older people, manage their health and well-being, focusing on preventative interventions on key indicators such as frailty and resilience.

ALONE uses technology to build networks and enable older people to stay secure and well while living independently.

The information and knowledge the volunteers have is truly second to none. They know about financial supports and other benefits, and it is important to stress that all contact with them is totally confidential.

I would urge people across Cavan Monaghan to make contact with ALONE and avail of the very vital back up it offers.”
