We, the undersigned, call for an urgent and transparent investigation into the decision made by the Education Authority to cancel Special Educational Needs (SEN) Summer Schemes, announced on Thursday 26th March and abruptly reversed on Friday 27th March.

While we welcome the sudden reinstatement of these essential services and the confirmation that cover is now available, this reversal raises serious and pressing concerns. How was such a critical provision cancelled in the first place? What level of communication took place within the Education Authority, and what cross-departmental discussions occurred prior to this decision being made? Who was responsible, and on what basis was this decision justified?

SEN Summer Schemes are not optional extras—they are vital lifelines for children with additional needs and their families. The distress, uncertainty, and disruption caused by this decision cannot be overlooked or dismissed simply because it has now been reversed.

In any other profession, a decision of this magnitude—affecting vulnerable individuals and causing widespread alarm—would be subject to immediate scrutiny, accountability, and, where appropriate, consequences. There is no reason why this situation should be treated any differently.

We demand:

  • A full and independent investigation into the decision-making process.
  • Transparency regarding who was involved, what discussions took place, and when.
  • Accountability for any failures in communication or judgment.
  • Clear assurances that safeguards will be put in place to prevent such a situation from happening again.

The public deserves better. Families deserve better. Children with SEN deserve stability, respect, and proper provision—not uncertainty and last-minute reversals.

We call on the relevant authorities to act now and ensure that this matter is thoroughly investigated without delay.
