Aontú is hosting a pro-life conference in the Canal Court Hotel, Newry, this Saturday to discuss building a culture that truly values every human life.
Speaking before the event, Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly said;
“The promise of ‘safe, legal, and rare’ abortion in Ireland has been broken. With over 10,000 abortions per year, and the recent shocking news that 12 tiny, defenceless babies were born alive following botched terminations, the tragic reality of this policy is clear. Voters were duped by a campaign of false compassion.
Aontú has sought to introduce common-sense humanity into this debate. We are campaigning to ensure pain relief is given to an unborn child during late-term abortions and, crucially, that comfort and medical care are provided to any child who survives the procedure. That these humane proposals have been ignored is all the more jarring, given that we now know babies are being born alive and left to die.
This, alongside tragic cases of misdiagnosis leading to the abortion of healthy children, exposes the undeniable cruelty of the current system. While other parties, including Sinn Féin and the SDLP, went to Westminster to lobby for abortion up to birth, Aontú stands as the only all-Ireland party defending the human right to life, from beginning to end.
We are resolutely opposed to the introduction of assisted suicide, advocating instead for greater investment in palliative and end-of-life care.
History teaches us that what is legal is not always right. Just as slavery was once law but is now universally condemned, we believe society will one day look back on abortion with similar horror. The first step is to have this honest conversation, which is why Aontú is hosting a pro-life conference in the Canal Court Hotel, Newry, on October 4th to discuss building a culture that truly values every human life. All who share our vision are welcome.”
