The Meath On Track Campaign Welcomes Inclusion of the Navan to Dublin Rail Line in the National Development Plan.

The Meath On Track Campaign Welcomes Inclusion of the Navan to Dublin Rail Line in the National Development Plan.

Cathaoirleach of the Meath on Track Campaign Peadar Tóibín TD has welcomed the inclusion of the Navan to Dublin Rail Line in the National Development Plan. He stated;

“This is good news. There has been a lot of work done by the Meath on Track Campaign to put serious pressure on the government on this issue in the run up to this decision. The importance of this piece of infrastructure to the county cannot be overstated”.

“This morning the majority of workers in Meath left the county today to go to work outside the county, this happens in no other county, in the country, Meath people commute further than any other county, indeed Navan is the largest town in the country without a rail line. Tens of thousands of people in Meath are living in commuting hell, spending 2 and 3 hours stuck in traffic. All of this must change for the physical and mental wellbeing of the county and for the economic health of Meath”.

“Despite the project being in the NDP, the government have still not committed to it. So we are cautious still in term of this. The rail line has been kicked around as a political football for so long now that many people are cynical on the government’s approach”.

“We in the Meath on Track Campaign urge the government to stop dragging their heals on it. We need to see a cast iron commitment, a start date and ring-fenced funding. And we need to see that now”.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
