The Irish Government have implemented the longest and most serve lockdown in Europe with devastating consequences

Speaking in advance of the announcement of the next phase of restrictions, Aontú Leader Peadar Tóibín TD stated;

“The Irish Government have implemented the longest and most serve lockdown in Europe with devastating consequences. There have been 190 days of workplace closures in Ireland. This is a multiple of most other EU countries. The Irish government’s approach is an outlier. Yet there has been little benefit in terms of mortality and morbidly figures."

"The Irish Government have relied on blanket lockdowns because it has failed in terms of protection of the Nursing Homes, failed to protect of our airports, failed in the roll out and procure vaccines, failed to significantly increase hospital capacity and properly cooperate on an All Ireland basis."

"The government is treating the Irish people like children. They have refused to date to detail exactly the criteria needed to reopen the country. How many people from what cohorts do we need to vaccinate before we can start to reopen. How many hospital and ICU admissions do we need to get to before we can start reopening. This information should be clear. We are being told that there is light at the end of the tunnel but the tunnel is getting longer and longer."

"Remaining restrictions must be forensic. They must be based on science. Too often the Government and NPHET have closed activities not on the science of the activity itself but in their words “because of the message it sends out in terms of the general movement of the people”. The Government and Nphet must stop treating adults like children. Illogical restrictions undermine all restrictions."

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
