The Government Are Losing The People On Covid

Aontú Leader & Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has stated that the floundering mismanagement of Covid by the Government has led in large part to growing frustration and fatigue amongst many people. He stated;

An Teachta Tóibín:

"Ireland has been in full Lockdown for over 180 days over the past year. Over 1,600 people have died in our nursing homes. Our National Debt is exploding. There are now massive levels of unemployment and incomes have radically collapsed for many."

"Despite the great cost, the vast majority of people have adhered to these restrictions over "the last year. However, people see the vaccine roll out disaster, the mandatory quarantine disaster, the scandal of the Nursing Home deaths, the lack of hospital capacity, the refusal to achieve all Ireland cooperation. People see failures of government management in these areas as the cause, in large part, of the policy of depending on long term blanket lockdowns."

"People are also sick and tired of being treated like children. Only 10 loved ones are allowed attend a funeral, whilst triple that number can enter a Supermarket to buy crisps and ice cream. Parks are full of people on the weekend yet golf is banned. We have challenged Nphet over the logic of some of these restrictions. They have stated that its not the issue itself but the message it gives to people on their ability to move about society. This is treating adults like children. People hear that message as ‘we don’t trust up with logical restrictions because you won’t understand them and you will move about too much."

"The government is also losing the people because the government have not shown any light at the end of an never-ending tunnel. No one knows when society will reopen. No one knows what criteria is necessary in terms of vaccines and hospital admissions to allow people start to earn a living again. Here again the government is treating people like children. The Government must vaccinate the vulnerable and then reopen society. The Government must give clear milestones in terms of vaccine roll out, that when reached, people can start to earn a living again”.

"A government keeping people in the dark will continue to lose their confidence."

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
