TDs Prevented from Questioning NPHET is Two Fingers to the Democratic System

Aontú Leader & Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has called the inability of TDs to question NPHET a threat to the democratic oversight within the country.

An Teachta Tóibín:

“The decisions on practical every aspect of the life of the country are being made by NPHET. Today Ireland’s workplaces have been locked down 196 days. By far the longest length of time of any other EU country. I, as an elected representative cant ask NPHET why their policy on Lockdowns is so radically different than every other country. Cancer services will not be fully open until the end of the year. Yet despite 24 people dying of cancer every day TDs can’t ask NPHET why so many life saving Cancer services are not fully operational. The hospital service is not overwhelmed yet heart disease, stroke and mental health service remained at reduced function”.

“Outdoor transmission of Covid is a negligible risk. Yet private Home building, Children's sports, Golf, Tennis, Click and collect, Families meeting outdoors and outdoor Religious services are all closed. 500,000 people, nearly 20% of the population are unemployed. Hundreds of thousands of people are being pushed into poverty, the economy is being crippled, taking on enormous debt and still the TDs are refused access to NPHET to ask questions to tease out why Nphet chose an outlier health strategy in EU terms”.

“Never before in the history of the state was so much power invested in so few unelected individuals. Never before was there so little opposition, so little opportunity to question and challenge. Ireland has always been prone to group think and uniformity but never so much as now. Students are being forced to either take the vaccine or ditch their careers and the government is openly planning a two tier citizenship where civil liberties will be determined not by citizenship but by a vaccine pass. Instead of encouraging people the government has decided to brow beat people. If we seek to as Nphet a question TDs have to asks journalists to do it for us. This processis two fingers to the democratic system and we demand that it stops immediately”.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
