Suspension of Work at Tara Mines is a Serious Blow for Meath
Aontú Leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has stated that;
“Tara Mines is the largest lead and zinc mine in Europe. It has been providing employment to Meath for 45 years. Its in top 3 employers in Meath. There are 600 well paid jobs and an enormous amount of other secondary businesses dependent upon it. Every day more Meath people leave Meath to go to work than work in the county. This happens in no other county in the state. The Meath economy is very dependent on these jobs. The newly discovered ore deposit, termed ‘Tara Deep’ is located approximately 1km southeast of the main mine, obviously extraction depends on the cost benefit. We hope this event won’t change the economic logic”.
“I have spoken to local business people who are obviously concerned about the health and safety of the workers but they are also conscious in the run up to Christmas of the potential impact a long closure. Management are confident that this will be brought under control. We hope they are right and wish them luck”.
