Senior Civil Servants Getting Preretirement Gold Plated Secondments Must End – Tóibín

Aontú leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has stated that the process of Senior Senior Civil servants getting preretirement gold plated secondments has to end. He was commenting on news that two former Secretary Generals of Government departments, Seán Ó Foghlú and Fergal Lynch being given academic roles while retaining their Sec Gen salaries. An Teachta Tóibín stated;

“These are salaries given to the former Sec Gens are far in excess of other academic staff working within the 3rd level sector.  It looks like these roles were created specifically  as preretirement gold plated Secondments for these senior civil servants. It looks like these jobs were not open, nor were they advertised so that other qualified citizens could apply for these jobs. Whether or it is legal, it is yet another example of the two tier society that we live in.  Its incredible that the that the relevant Ministers remained quite over this practice even in the wake of the Holloman Secondment scandal. The Taoiseach must tell us know are there are any other examples of this practice, he must root it out and his government must start to treat each citizen of the state equally. All public jobs must be open to all qualified citizens”.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
