Seán MacNiocaill Selected by Aontú to Contest Belfast North Constituency in Stormont Election

Aontú has selected Seán MacNiocaill as their candidate for Belfast North in the next Assembly Elections. Belfast North is an important constituency for the party as we aim to challenge the broken Stormont Establishment.

Sean MacNiocaill is a proud Republican and father, hailing from a long Republican tradition. A landscape gardener by trade and an amateur historian, Sean is dedicated to ensure future generations acknowledge the sacrifices of those who came before us, and that the beauty of the land we call home is not forgotten. He has also encountered first hand the difficulties that young people face in finding suitable, affordable housing. Young families are having to come to terms with the reality that they may never own a home. Many young people are unable to save for a deposit amid the spiralling cost of living. This is unacceptable and action is needed now. As an Aontú MLA, Sean will protect our proud history as he fights to ensure that our youth have a bright future.

An Teachta Tóibín: “44,000 people are on housing waiting lists, 250,000 people are on hospital waiting lists for longer than a year, ¼ of a million people are in poverty and SF/SDLP MLAs have voted for abortion right up until the birth of the child. That the DUP has torn down Stormont in the middle of these very real human crisis is wrong and it must not be allowed to happen again. Aontú is the only political party calling for the reform of the democratic institutions to prevent any one party tearing them down again or any one party preventing an Executive being formed in the future. These life and death issues are too important for Stormont to be crashed over and over again. We are also calling for the suspension of MLA salaries for the political parties who crash the democratic institutions or prevent Executives being formed”.

“Sean is a deeply-committed Republican and family man, who is standing up for the people of Belfast North.  Sean will work to hold British security forces, the PSNI and Loyalist Paramilitaries accountable for their actions. British security forces went to great pains to portray themselves as "peacekeepers" over the last 50 years. However recent reports have confirmed what many Nationalists and Republicans already knew – that the British army colluded with Loyalist terrorists to murder innocent Catholics. It is Sean’s belief that it is important that anyone who holds justice in high regard works together to ensure families see those responsible held to account. An accountability that is no less important today, as the PSNI try to hide behind PIIs regarding Noah Donohoe's case. Sean will be a voice for Republicans who feel too long ignored by the parties meant to represent them.”

“Aontú is only three years old, yet we have achieved over 50,000 votes, has elected reps from Derry to Wexford, has over 1,000 members and 60 functioning Cumann. Aontú is polling higher that PbP and similar levels to the Labour and the Greens. We are an All-Ireland political movement that is now preparing for the Stormont elections. The north is at a cross roads. Do we stumble along from one crisis to another or do we back the Aontú campaign to reform the system for the better. A vote for Sean is a vote for compassion and a vote to fix the broken system.”

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
