Sarah O'Reilly

Bailieborough-Cootehill LEA - Cavan County Council

Cllr Sarah O’Reilly is Cavan’s hardest working councillor.

She was rewarded for that work by the good people of Bailieborough-Cootehill when she topped the poll in this area in the local election 2019.

Sarah is an Accountant Technician by trade. She has worked in Agriculture, as a political administrator and as a buyer for an international company in Cavan Town.

Sarah is a member of the Castle Lake Committee, Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB), the Joint Policing Committee (JPC), Bailieborough Community School, Cavan’s Enterprise and Economic SPC, Cavan’s Transport and Infrastructure SPC, she also held the prestigious position of Chair of Cavan County Council 2020-2021.

Sarah is hands-on in her work. She is a woman of the people.

She led the campaign nationally to reverse the decision of the GAA to go cashless. But much more than all of that, Sarah is well known for her strength of character, a rare quality in Irish politics. She has the courage and the backbone to stand up for her community when they need it.

Sarah's Local Election Leaflet

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
