Public Meeting For Parents on SPHE Concerns - Mary T Sweeney, Aontú Donegal General Election Candidate

Following on from serious concerns raised by parents across Donegal around the contents of the new SPHE (Social Personal and Health Education ) for young school pupils,  Aontú’s Donegal candidate is urging them to turn out for tonight’s (9th October, 2024) information meeting on the issue .

Mary T Sweeney , a candidate in the upcoming general election, says she has been inundated with calls and correspondence from worried parents, guardians and teachers following revelations from former teacher Mary Creedon on the contents on the curriculum.

Ms Creedon , who has now resigned her position ,will speak by Zoom at tonight’s meeting.

Ms Sweeney says “ Nobody is saying that young people should not be provided with information on sex , of course they absolutely should, but the contents in this SPHE Course are expressly and needlessly graphic ,totally inappropriate for the target age group and arguably most worryingly of all, it appears that children may be advised not to disclose to their parents the contents of the course. I find this absolutely astounding and it raises serious safeguarding issues”

“I want parents to be informed and I would encourage as many as possible to come to our meeting tonight”

The meeting takes place at the Station House Hotel in Letterkenny on 9th October at 7pm

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
