Patrick Murphy

Ireland South & Bantry-West Cork LEA - Cork County Council

Ballydehob native Patrick Murphy is Chief Executive of the Organisation of Fishermen and Fish Producers known as the Irish South & West Fish Producers Organisation (IS&WFPO) based in Castletownbere on the Beara Peninsula.

He is 53 years old, married to Rose and has four children. Patrick is a Community Activist and the former Chair of our Village’s Community Council in Ballydehob on the Mizen Peninsula. For many years he was a member of the local Summer Festival Committee and of Ballydehob Jazz committee, a Leader of a local Youth Organisation, a GAA Youth-team Coach, member of the Parents’ School Committee and an AED First Responder and Instructor.

Many may know him from our fishermen’s protest along the south coast that stopped Russian Military Naval Exercises from occurring in Irish sovereign waters off the south coast in January of 2022.

That success was repeated some few months later when our fishing community persuaded the French Military not to engage in similar exercises in those same Irish sovereign waters.

Patrick's Local Election Leaflet

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
