Over 42,000 signatures for Aontú petition to oppose Sinn Féin-Westminster extreme abortion law - Tóibín

More than 42,000 people have signed the petition calling on Michelle O'Neill and Sinn Féin to act before it's too late to stop the most extreme abortion legislation in Europe from being imposed by Westminster MPs on the north of Ireland.

At the eleventh hour, there is very little time to stop Westminster's abortion legislation.

An Teachta Tóibín stated:

"Sinn Féin lobbied for Westminster to ride roughshod over the people of the north of Ireland and impose an abortion regime in the north of Ireland that will allow for the ending of human lives as par for the course in an unprecedented way.

"We know that abortion targets the most voiceless and vulnerable section of the human family. Abortion additionally targets particularly vulnerable groups of people, such as ethnic minorities and those with disabilities. This is borne out by international statistics.

"Rather than tackling structural problems in our society, particularly those problems disproportionately faced by women, such as poverty and job insecurity, abortion provides an escape mechanism for the establishment so that they do not have to address pressing issues. Poverty and issues of resources should be confronted. Nullifying the right to life is an extremely regressive step that does nothing to alleviate the structural problems faced in society.

"Sinn Féin's role in seeking British abortion laws for the north of Ireland has been jaw-dropping for all who have the pursuit of Irish Self-Determination at heart. For 200 years Irish republicans have told London that they have no business legislating for Ireland. In an extreme change of direction Mary Lou and Michelle O’Neill went to London and demanded that Westminister impose this abortion legislation on the people of the north of Ireland. Like The Workers' Party before them, Sinn Féin have sold out on the most important pillar of Irish Republicanism, Irish Self-Determination.

"We are calling for Sinn Féin at this late hour to do the right thing and act to stop the imposition of British abortion laws in Ireland. If they don’t they will be directly responsible for the regime that follows."

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
