One size fits all Rule on Pubs Does not make Sense

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín TD has called on the government to create a tailored solution for pubs who are currently closed due to Covid 18. He stated;

“Pubs received a significant shock last week on the postponement of the reopening of thousands of pubs around the country. Many are waiting for the August 10th decision in fear. Its clear that we need to make sure that decisions are made on the basis of keeping Covid -19 suppressed within the community. But its also clear that many individual pubs can function as safely as many restaurants that are serving food around the country”.

“Pubs come in all shapes and sizes. Many have large outdoor areas and function rooms. A one size fits all rule does not make sense in many cases. In certain towns and villages temporary extensions onto the street and the roadside could be undertaken safely has happened in Dublin City Centre. Customer per square meter limits could be contemplated”.

“We may well be living with Covid-19 for quite some time. Its clear that we need to keep citizens safe. We also need to ensure that society functions where possible. Its clear that this can be done if we are flexible, creative and can develop bespoke solutions for individual businesses”.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
