Ógra Aontú calls for Measures to Tackle Drink Spiking
Ógra Aontú has today called on the government to introduce a set of measures to tackle the rate of drink-spiking in our pubs and nightclubs across the country.
Speaking today spokesperson for the group, Lucas Meehan, said:
"In Califormia it's required of pubs and nightclubs to provide drink-spiking tests either free or very cheaply to all customers. There seems to have been a reduction in the rate of spiking there since this was introduced. In Ireland there has been a more than 1,000% increase in the rate of reported drink spikings. Around 54% of Irish people are worried about their drink being spiked".
Lucas continied: "Spiking must also be made a stand-alone criminal offence, and while we recognise that the government have introduced legislation in this area, the Bill's progression through the house has been slow, and we are calling on the government to ensure swift passage before the election. The Bill's definitions may need to be examined - it focuses a lot on intent, but we would argue that intent is irrelevant and spiking should be illegal regardless of what the motivation of the perpetrator was".
