Navan NX Bus Route Causing Chaos Again for Commuters - Tóibín

Speaking in relation to the absences and lack of buses along the NX route, Leader of Aontú and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín said;

“The Navan NX Bus service is in crisis again. Individual services are being dropped and dozens of commuters are being left behind by full buses. I have contacted  by numerous constituents who have informed of a bus service that is becoming increasingly irregular. Buses are passing bus stops along the route. Some buses are late. Others some that come on time are then overcrowded with people sitting on the steps and in the aisle of the bus”.
Meath is more dependent on bus services than any other county. We are the largest commuter county in the country. Meath is the only county where more people leave the county for work than stay in the county for work. We commute further than any other county. On top of this we have the largest town with no rail line in the country. This should mean that our bus transport should be at a much higher standard than it is currently”.

“The strain being put on people simply trying to get to work on time is horrendous. Being late for work over and over again buts jobs at risk. This is especially acute during the cost of living crisis. It is not good enough".
“I raised this crisis a few years ago with Shane Ross, the previous Minister for Transport in 2019. It was mentioned by the Minister that he would raise the issue with the National Transport Authority (NTA) in conjunction with Bus Éireann, yet 3 years later nothing has changed. It's not tolerable especially given that people in Meath do not have proper transport options. I have raised it again with the current Minister for Transport”.

“There is a lack of capacity to cater for all commuters from Meath, so much so that safety of the passengers is being breached with overcrowding. Today, we were told that three separate NX Navan to Dublin buses all were full before Johnstown this morning. This left dozens at bus stops this morning. This needs urgent action now by Bus Éireann. The answer is obvious, put on more buses, and hire more drivers”.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
