Length and Severity of Covid Lockdown is a Direct Result of Catastrophic Covid Policies

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín TD has responded to reports of Cabinet decisions on restrictions over the next 6 weeks. He stated;

“The length and severity of Covid restrictions in Ireland are a direct result of the catastrophic policies of this government. The government have failed disastrously in terms of slowness in vaccine roll out. This weakness will become even more stark as neighbouring countries reopen ahead of us”.

“To date this state has inoculated the equivalent population of one county, county Louth. The confusion continues as student nurses who are not on placement have contacted me to say that they have been offered their first vaccine although they have received their first dose. This is happening while Doctors surgeries are calling me as they cannot get confirmation of vaccine for people over 85 for the next 2 weeks”.

“This government continues to import Covid Variants through our airports. The government has resisted controls at airports since flights were arriving from northern Italy nearly 1 year ago. Cooperation with the Executive in the north of Ireland has never materialised. There has been clear lack of government will to really push for this”.

“The lack of capacity in our health service continues to devasting effect as hundreds of thousands of people on waiting lists with significant threats to life and health are locked out of treatment. Ireland has been an outlier in international terms with regards the length and severity of restrictions. Yet comparatively there has been little or no benefit to Ireland in terms of the severity of the illness. Ireland has had to rely on Lockdown longer than other countries because the government have not got the other key weapons against the virus right”.

Today we see that there is practically no light at the end of the tunnel for families under unprecedented pressure.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
