Legacy Act needs repeal, not reform - Brolly

Aontú Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly has responded to recent comments by Northern Secretary Hilary Benn on reform of the Legacy Act by saying that that the Act needs to be binned entirely, not tinkered with around the edges.

Mrs Brolly said:

“There will be very few victims or their families who want to hear anything from Hilary Benn other than he will repeal the shameful Legacy Act.  The idea that any elements of it have a positive purpose is for the birds, the opposition to it from communities was to every element of it.

The retention of the ICRIR as part of structures of the Act is not acceptable, indeed when Mr Benn was speaking publicly about this issue the ICRIR has been publicly recruiting staff to investigate cases - that is sending distressful mixed messages.

We are clear, we stand with victims and their families in reiterating their call for a complete dismantling of this shameful legislation and a process that will actually deliver truth and justice where it has been too long denied.”

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
