Government Know Link Between Sexual Violence and Children Watching Porn, Yet Do Nothing - Tóibín

Another significant study was published this week which showed the link between children watching porn and sexual violence. This time the Children’s Commissioner for England has published a report which clearly identifies the link. Speaking on the issue Aontú leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín stated:

The Children’s Commissioner for England report is yet another report that highlights the clear link between children watching pornography and the shocking increase in sexual violence. In this report the English Children’s Commissioner Rachel de Souza clearly states “that much of which depicts degrading acts and violence against women”. She states, “frequent users of pornography were also more likely to have real-life experience of an aggressive or degrading sex act”. She found “references to specific acts of sexual violence commonly seen in pornography in half of the interviews carried out following these cases of sexual abuse”. The author is clear that pornography is fuelling sexual violence against women and the increase in children sexually abusing other children. Rachel de Souza goes on to say that “I am clear that children should not be able to access pornography, and my office’s work in this space continues to demonstrate the harm it can cause to children and young people”.

“Research in Ireland shows that boys as young as eight years of age are accessing pornography online and one in every three porn videos depicts explicit sexual violence or aggression. Mainstream pornography now frequently shows violence against women such as strangulation and degradation as standard, fuelling gender-based violence and preventing gender equality, research shows. It is distorting children’s understanding of relationships and sexuality. Its leading to leading rape and sexual assault. If an stranger came into your house and gave this material to your children, you would be forgiven for throwing him out of your house and calling the Gardaí. Yet this is in fact whats happening every single day and eh government is doing nothing about it. The government is banning the advertising of junk food to children but yet wont use the same common sense hen it comes to children consuming pornography”.

“There has been a massive increase in the number of sexual crimes in society over the last 10 years. In 2011 there were 1,958 Sexual offences recorded. In 2021 the figure increased by 75%to 3,433 sexual offences. In 2011 there were 447 rapes recorded. In 2021 it had doubled to 983 rapes. Ireland is becoming a more violent in terms of sexual assault crimes. Children at Risk in Ireland (CARI), a specialist and professional therapy service for children who have been abused has found that there has been a 44% increase in sexual abuse and sexually harmful behaviour on children by children in the last 2 years. The heart breaking Anna Kriegel case was a shockingly. Both boys were 13 years of age when they murdered Ana Kriegel. Yet they had more than 12,000 images - the vast majority pornographic on two mobile phones belonging to one of the boys”.

Aontú has introduced the Protection of Children from Online Pornography Bill into the Dáil. The Aontú Bill would make it illegal for Internet Service Providers to provide hard core pornography to children. The FF/FG/Green government refused to help the bill proceed through the Dáil. The government could approach the Internet Service Providers and call on them to provide an opt-in safe internet service for families that would allow homes to be safe of the most violent material on the internet. But all we have seen in the last ten years from the government is paralysis. Indeed rather than any effort to stop the supply of hard core pornography to children the government seeks to deliver classes to children in school on the topic. While education is important, its reckless of the government to make no effort to protect children. CRIOCH

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
