GEMMA BROLLY: Tories, Sinn Féin & SDLP Seeking to Undermine Devolution, Democracy and Human Rights by Making the North of Ireland the Abortion Capital of Europe

Aontú Representative for East Derry Gemma Brolly has slammed the Tories, particularly Brandon Lewis, in trying to impose an extreme abortion regimen upon the North – in an undemocratic manner which violates the Good Friday Agreement, Devolution and Human Rights.

Rep Brolly: “Unlike people in the south, the citizens of the North of Ireland have had their democratic right denied when it comes to voicing their wishes regarding abortion legislationIf Mr. Lewis, in collusion with Sinn Féin and SDLP has his way the legislation in the North will be much harsher than that of Britain, the south of Ireland and much of Europe, funded by us, the taxpayers of course.”

It would of course be much easier to believe that this legislation is simply to assist those women in the most horrendous or extenuating circumstances, as is often the primary argument for abortion, howeverthe public deserve to know the detail of this legislation and deserve to exercise their democratic right on such legislation, without having it forced upon them from bodies claiming to advocate democracy and stand for the rights of the people.”

As recently as last week and rightfully so, all five parties in Stormont stood up as our representatives and unequivocally denied the right of Westminster to impose legislation which would strip our victims and families of their right to justice. Yet it must be remembered, Sinn Féin and SDLP previously went cap in hand to Westminster, opened the door and invited them in to legislate for the North, whilst denying them their democratic rights regarding abortion legislation. Which is it to be? To legislate or not to legislate, independently?”

Since March 2020, 1624 babies have been aborted, an average of three classrooms per month and yet it seems this is nowhere near enough for these people. They demand the introduction of the harshest legislation which could double or treble this number. This legislation would mean no restrictions up to seven months of pregnancy. The threat of abortion up to birth where the baby has potentially a life-limiting disability. This is probably one of the worst forms of discrimination in the world in our generation. How dare any governmental body or anyone ‘rate’ the value of anyone’s lives. We, in Aontú have called this out from the start and we will not stop. We stand for the rights of all from womb to tomb, we will not shy away or be silenced on this. Westminster in collusion with Sinn Féin and SDLP broke all principles of democracy and devolved government when they invited London to impose abortion on the north. Aontú will work tirelessly to safeguard the right to democracy and primarily and unashamedly, the right to life of everyone.”

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
